Vancouver site sought for love locks. Every Lock is a Love Lock.
There is a famous bridge in Italy, Ponte Milvio bridge in Rome, where lovers can bring a padlock and lock it to a railing as a symbol of their everlasting love. Over time the bridge has been covered in ‘love locks.’ The ‘love lock’ trend grew in popularity, spreading elsewhere throughout the city and becoming a major tourist attraction.
Paris actually has Two Love bridges , the Pont de l’Archevêché and the Pont des Arts, are probably the most well known love lock bridges in the World. One bridge is for “lovers” and the other bridge is for “the love of your life.”
Lovers in Vancouver have attempted to replicate the ‘love lock’ trend, but have had their efforts thwarted several times. Lovers in Vancouver used to attach their locks to the Burrard Bridge, but these were removed in 2013. After that the ‘love locks’ started showing up on the seawall of Northeast False Creek, but these were also removed.
NPA councillor George Affleck says a permanent place needs to be found for the locks.
“I would like to ask staff to recommend a home for the ‘love locks’. This has the potential to attract tourists, as well as locals, and removing them simply looks like we are returning to the ‘no-fun city’ that we are trying not to be.”
“These types of spontaneous, quirky activities make Vancouver a great place to live,” says Affleck. “We need to foster this energy. The ‘love locks’ deserve a home.”
“Non-Partisan Association commissioners of the Park Board are taking on the challenge of choosing a spot for Vancouver’s “love locks” where they won’t get routinely removed. Locks and keys are often represented as symbols of everlasting love. This is most obvious in the expression ‘key to my heart.’ ‘Love locks’ are often decorated with the names of the lovers, and is meant to symbolize their eternal love and connection. As a locksmith, locks symbolize protection, safety, and family. Locks protect what is most important to you. Be it your vehicle, or your family, we view every lock as ‘love lock.’
Currently the state of the ‘love locks’ in Vancouver is uncertain. Vancouver has often battled with the label of the ‘no-fun’ city. By finding a permanent home, maybe we can start being known as a ‘yes-love’ city.
